4 Top Tips If You Have Hashimoto's Disease And Premature Ovarian Insufficiency

Hashimoto’s is a thyroid condition that we see in many of our women diagnosed with POI. And shockingly, 1 in 8 women will develop a thyroid condition in their lifetime. So what is Hashimoto’s and what can be done?

What is Hashimoto’s?

Hashimoto’s is an autoimmune condition affecting the thyroid. The thyroid is a butterfly-shaped gland located at the base of the neck. The thyroid produces hormones that help regulate many functions in the body.

As with other autoimmune conditions, this means the immune system of people living with Hashimoto’s is attacking healthy tissue.

Specifically with this disease, it results in the death of the thyroid’s hormone-producing cells which results in a decline in hormone production, also known as hypothyroidism.

Hashimoto’s is most common in middle-aged women and is not uncommon among women facing challenges with getting pregnant.

Premature Ovarian Insufficiency

Premature Ovarian Insufficiency, what we refer to as POI is a  loss of normal function of the ovaries before age 40. “Most causes of POI remain undefined, however, it is estimated that anywhere from 4–30% of cases are autoimmune in origin” and as we know, Hashimoto’s is an autoimmune condition. Not to mention, “The most strongly associated group [of autoimmune conditions associated with POI are] that of thyroid-related disturbances”.

Actionable Steps

There is A LOT of hope for pregnancy success with Hashimoto’s and POI! The most powerful action steps are reducing inflammation and removing triggers that are fueling the fire.

When working with a woman with Hashimoto’s and POI we are going to:

  1. Completing functional testing to get the full, big picture of everything that is going on in her body so we can tackle any existing co-conditions.
  2. Recommending a customized supplement regime including the basics that we share in our Fab Fertile Store.
  3. Tackling what is in her diet is likely to trigger further inflammation. Specifically, there is an abundance of research suggesting that people living with Hashimoto’s may dramatically benefit from a gluten and grain free diet. Also, a study of 83 women with Hashimoto’s thyroiditis, 75.9% were diagnosed with lactose intolerance, so dairy should be evaluated as well.
  4. Lifestyle changes like movement, stress management, sleep and water consumption
