As a woman wanting to conceive and have a healthy pregnancy, I’m sure you have come to the realization that it is necessary to utilize a broad range of natural therapies to improve your reproductive well-being.

Using essential oils is just one of those ways which can play a vital role in enhancing fertility.

During my interview with Stephanie Fritz, licensed midwife and certified professional midwife, she provided us with an essential oil (EO) blend recipe to help with various fertility issues.

You can find the recipe here.

Today we are taking a deeper look at Geranium, one of the oils found in this wonderful blend.

There are 250 varieties of Geranium!

Surprisingly there are over 250 varieties of Geranium, many even sharing the same botanical name Pelargonium graveolens.

Because of this, Geranium can be a bit tricky to know which one you need, as Geranium oil from different parts of the world tend to differ in their chemical proportions in spite of sharing the name P. graveolens.

For example, two common varieties of Geranium EO found for purchase are Geranium Bourbon and Geranium Egyptian.

Although both are wonderful oils, Geranium Bourbon is mostly used for fragrances rather than therapeutic purposes, whereas Geranium Egyptian is better is known for its beneficial effects on women’s reproductive.

Which Geranium Oil is a good choice for fertility support?

I recommend Geranium Egyptian.

This strain of Geranium is known as the “women’s essential oil” due to its remarkable ability to balance the female hormones; it has the capability to regulate your cycle and is an ovarian and uterine tonic.

(Fun Fact: Pelargonium is a Greek word derived from Palargos meaning “stork”. How telling is that?)

On top of physical healing, Geranium oil also performs magic on emotions and can soothe frayed nerves – which can be extremely valuable when trying to conceive!

What are some other benefits of Geranium Oil?

As mention briefly above, Geranium EO is shown to have Tonic properties for overall health – internally by regulating hormones and strengthening respiratory, digestive, circulatory, nervous, and excretory systems – and externally by adding tone to muscles and skin.

Geranium Oil is a Vulnerary and speeds up the healing process of wounds, cuts and surgical incisions.

This essential oil has Diuretic properties and increases urination which helps to remove toxins from the body and reduces blood pressure by eliminating sodium.

Geranium EO has Neural Degeneration properties. This oil is shown to activate microglia cells which are integral components in the fight against neuro-degenerative diseases like Alzheimer’s and dementia.

A few words of caution:

It is commonly recommended to avoid this oil during the first trimester of pregnancy and use in dilutions thereafter.

This oil could irritate sensitive skin.

Additionally if you are taking any kind of medication metabolized by CYP2B6, drug interaction may occur, so check with your doctor before use.

It is also good to note that the best-quality geranium oil can be a bit expensive to make as oils go, so in turn it is often diluted with artificial esters, cedarwood, turpentine or lemongrass to turn a bigger profit.

These impure oils are sold as true geranium to the public and not easily detected without lab testing. Pure oils give good results – impure do not – so buy very carefully. This particular oil can also be called by the botanical names Pelargonium asperu or Pelargonium x asperum.

Next Steps!

I love essential oils! I use them every night before I go to bed.

Essential oils are great to include in your fertility toolkit, but it is important not to self prescribe and consult an experienced practitioner to understand the root cause of why you are having difficulty conceiving.

Relying only on essential oils and not taking a holistic approach to your fertility may not give you the baby you are yearning for!

It takes 90 days for the egg to renew itself and 70-80 days for the life cycle of the sperm.

In just 3 months you can make dramatic changes to your health and fertility.
